Over the years, we have teamed up with community theater and organizations that have supported our process. They have written (and professionally produced) three pieces so far in our four years together. Their first piece, “Today,” tackled police brutality and racial profiling using Twitter feeds and set in a classroom. Their second piece, “Still,” inspired by Humans of New York, shares stories of teenage self-harm, L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. visibility, bullying and body shaming. And their most recent piece, “Something Old Something New,” inspired by Disney’s “Inside Out,” explores youth identity crises and what happens when we fail to unpack trauma or support mental health.

“This is what public demonstration looks like in an era when white nationalism isn’t on the fringes, but on the inside of the political mainstream,” says Brian Levin, a former New York City police officer who now leads the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino. During the run-up to some of last year’s major events in places like Charlottesville or Berkeley, he notes, “there was an unending stream of violent themed chatter and an almost choreographed exchange of web threats between antagonists across wide geographic expanses” that earned barely a nod from law enforcement.

Anderson and the four other nurses tasked with caring for the district’s 1,500 students do tend to cuts and bruises, but they also increasingly find they are helping students to manage mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. Audiences might decide differently by the time the play opens 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Newton Community Theatre, but directors Terry and Rachel Faidley both agree the transformative set of “Noises Off” has, at least, become “another actor” to the show’s nine-person cast, which includes: Kate Fudge, Conor Fudge, Jeff Carter, Amy McGhghy, Sara Collins, John Dougan, Julie Goodman, Scott Schaeffer and Mike McKenna.
