My human rights class for E.S.L. students has always been built around current events; I never know what I’m going to teach until life happens.

The project culminates in a TEDx Talk. They share what they’ve learned about their issues, talk about the forms of action they’ve already taken toward making a difference, and get see themselves in the vein of the activist leaders we’ve studied in preparation for this, like Bryan Stevenson, Malala Yousafzai and Emma Gonzalez.

It was in this atmosphere that Fears made his progress through various protests. He traveled to Charlottesville with a backpack of dystopian gear: goggles, gloves and a helmet, though he disguised himself as a Trump supporter in a suit. It was war. It was also fun. By the summer of 2017, the media had begun to cover more far-right events, leading more people to show up in protest, which furthered the right’s victimization narrative, which in turn led to more events and more violence, all of which was packaged into neat selling points for a movement whose actual real-life followers may have been far fewer than they appeared.

My freshmen also read Julia Alvarez’s novel “How the García Girls Lost Their Accents.” I have students examine statistics and stories about immigrants, and they have to interview a family member about their own family’s story of coming to the United States. Then, we do a jigsaw of articles about different immigrant groups who have been targeted and stereotyped at various times in our country’s history, such as the Irish and Italians. These groups were accused of such things as being terrorists and taking the jobs of Americans. My students recognize that these same accusations are hurled at Hispanic and Muslim immigrants today.

In the Armory show, at the Wentrup Gallery booth, Nevin Aladağ’s “Social Fabric” of 2017 is typical of this Turkish artist’s interests in pastiche. She combines carpet pieces of Iraqi, African, Chinese, American, and other origins to crossbreed the patterns, highlighting the funky, sexy look of abandon and imprecision. Also, Sanford Biggers had a strong presence. Biggers’s patterns and textures sumptuously occupied the David Castillo Gallery booth with four quilt-based wall works, a wonderful decoratively patterned linoleum floor, and a feather-covered sculptural figure, as well as smaller pieces on the outer walls. Reached at the American Academy in Rome, where he is currently a Fellow, Biggers claims his connection to Kozloff, Schapiro, and P&D openly:

One way this connection can occur in the classroom is through Socratic Seminars. To begin, students will read articles about current events and issues while creating questions based on the framework of Art Costa’s Levels of Questioning. Students will then lead the seminar by expressing their own thoughts and sentiments about the event. When carried out correctly, Socratic Seminars can be a great way for students to engage with each other in a safe space, use their voices to ask questions and speak their truth.
